This installation is programmed on Javascript, using algorithmic art. The input is the audio, and the output is the light show visual. The colors change in response to the volume of the audio, and the frequencies of bass / mid / treble in the audio changes the size and position of the shapes, emulating movement.
The interactive element is that the user is able to decide which visual layout they want to see, toggling between a number of pre-programmed designs with an external controller, gamifying both the listening and the visual experience.
The goal is to create a communal experience that introduces some agency to the listeners by giving them a chance to choose their visual experience. It also changes the relationship to art, as people aren’t just passive viewers. If their decisions are responsible for the outcome, they are artists too!
It creates an intrinsic desire to engage with the music by wanting to experience the installation. The physical space and the digital space enhance each other, working in tandem, instead of competing with each other.
